HOLMES University of Waterloo Edmund Husserl's theory of the noema has recently aroused interest and controversy among some of his commentators. This can be seen particularly in the case of Dagfinn P<pllesdall whose interpretation is different from the one I believe to be correct and which I defend below. For Foflesdal the noema turns out to be a concept, or abstract entity, and there is a radical distinction between the noema and the object that is intended. The following critique is offerred to dispel this erroneous inter- pretation, to show how it is incomplete in some very serious and misleading respects, and to explicate the correct interpretation of Husserl's theory of the noema as it is presented in Ideen L2 Føllesdal works out his interpretation in terms of the following twelve theses: (1) The noema is an intensional entity, a generalization of the notion of meaning (Sinn, Bedeutung).
