Rethinking Selfhood: From Enowning

Rethinking Selfhood: From Enowning © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2007 DOI: 10.1163/156916407X169825 Research in Phenomenolog y 37 (2007) 75–94 Rethinking Selfh ood: From Enowning François Raff oul Louisiana State University Abstract I propose in this paper to explore Heidegger’s thought of selfh ood in Contributions to Philoso- phy (From Enowning ) through a close reading of key paragraphs. It is oft en assumed that aft er the “turning” in his thinking , when Heidegger engages in a thought of Ereignis no longer centered on human Dasein as the locus of the meaning of being , the reference to selfh ood would fade away. However, a close reading of the Contributions reveals that a renewed think- ing of selfh ood, of what Heidegger calls “self-being” ( Selbst-sein ), is enacted precisely at the same time that the subjectivistic understanding of the self is more radically abandoned. I attempt to delineate how Heidegger undertakes to rethink selfh ood no longer from the para- digm of the ego, but from the event of Ereignis , or enowning. Keywords Selfh ood, Ereignis , Human being , ego, subjectivity Introduction I propose in this essay to delineate Heidegger’s thought of selfh ood in Con- tributions to Philosophy http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Research in Phenomenology Brill
