London, Academic Press; New York, Grune and Stratton, 1982. 277 pp. This book presents an impressive collection of studies in the field of phenomenological psychiatry, written by fourteen distinctive contribu- tors from eight different countries. The editors and the authors should be congratulated for making a volume of such high standing quality avail- able, through translations from many languages, to their English col- leagues. In this work, various phenomenological approaches have been used in the analyses of psychopathological phenomena. The latter range in scope from anxiety, hypochondria and sexual perversions to hallucina- tions, delusions, schizophrenia and manic-depressive psychosis. The phenomenological analyses are mostly based on a participant under- standing of descriptive accounts of lived experiences from patients. Some of the authors also resort to examples from literature in their search for essential characterizations of clinical phenomena. A number of chapters deal with theoretical foundations of phenomenology in psychiatry. Al- though it is impossible to review the main findings of every author, an attempt will be made to convey the nature of the various contributions and to highlight central themes and issues.
