Burkhart (Ph.D., Political Science, University of Iowa) is Associ- ate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Boise State University. His research interests include the political economy of cross-national democratization, comparative political culture, and Canada–US environmental and public policy. He has published in such journals as American Political Science Review, European Journal of Political Research, International Journal of Canadian Studies, Journal of Pol- itics, Social Science Journal, Social Science Quarterly and Studies in Com- parative International Development . His current research projects include the political culture of the American West, Canada–US environmental politics, and the impact of foreign direct investment flows and stocks on cross-national democratization. Mattei Dogan , a sociologist and political scientist, is a Senior Fellow at the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris and Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Trento, Indiana University, Yale University, the Insti- tute of Statistical Mathematics in Tokyo and the University of Florence.
