In this book on Th ird Way welfare state change, editors Lewis and Suren- der have compiled a substantial, heuristic tool for examining the ambigu- ity of Th ird Way welfare state politics and policies. In the contributions included in this volume, Th ird Way concepts, values, goals and policies are subjected to reflective analyses, which help clarify the complexities of the Th ird Way program, while also showing remarkable convergence in Th ird Way policy-making across countries. In the first section of the book, the authors struggle with the broad spectrum of Th ird Way policy contexts and concepts. To start, Surender offers an analysis of the context of politi- cal and policy formations and how they can explain differences in the rela- tive success of Th ird Way policies across the US, the UK and Australia. Th is chapter highlights similarities in welfare state change, but Surender also shows that the unique policy context in each country determines
