Also available online - www.vsppub.com Editorial Obituary AZRIEL ROSENFELD We regret to report the death of Azriel Rosenfeld, who passed away Feb. 22, 2004. Azriel was an enthusiastic supporter of Spatial Vision from its inception in 1984/85. He served continuously on the Editorial Advisory Board and co-edited two special issues of the journal. His wide expertise in pattern and machine vision, as well as his interests in human vision and in mathematics, made his contribution particularly valuable. His was a long and varied career. He was a tenured Research Professor, a Distinguished University Professor, and Director of the Center for Automation Research at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he also held affiliate professorships in the Departments of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Psychology. He held a PhD in mathematics from Columbia University (1957), rabbinic ordination (1952) and a Doctor of Hebrew Literature (1955) from Yeshiva University, and many honorary degrees. He was widely regarded as a leading researcher in the world in the field of computer image analysis.
