Inflammopharmacology, Vol. 12, No. 3, pp. 211 – 213 (2004) VSP 2004. Also available online - www.vsppub.com Editorial New combinations of anti-inflammatories for therapy of arthritic, neurological and malignant diseases Many advances in treatment of rheumatic and other chronic diseases have come about through serendipitous discoveries or thinking beyond the boundaries of what is accepted practice. In recent years drug combinations have become widely accepted for use in treating rheumatic conditions, having been established practice now for several decades for treating malignancies. Indeed, much has been learnt from treating cancer that has been applied to rheumatoid arthritis with the use of methotrexate with biological agents, the combinations of cytostats with steroids and so forth. In the opposite way the past decade has seen an explosion of interest in the potential for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the prevention of colo-rectal and other cancers which had its basis, in part, in observations of the reduced incidence of this condition in rheumatic patients as well in the early studies by the late Prof. Alan Bennett about 3 decades ago of increased production of prostaglandins (PGs), especially PGE , in biopsies of colon and other cancers compared with corresponding normal tissues.
