Procalcitonin (PCT) is produced in the thyroid gland as the precursor of human calcitonin [1]. PCT is a 116 amino acid protein with a molecular weight of approximately 13 kD and is composed of an N-terminal region, mid-regional calcitonin, and the C-terminal katacalcin [2]. Prehormone levels in serum have been found to be elevated in medullary thyroid carcinoma as well as in a large number of other tumors [4, 5]. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a typical marker of acute in ammation and bacterial infection [3]. Recently, PCT was found to be a new and innovative infection parameter [6], and to provide better diagnostic validity in the evaluation, monitoring and prognostic estimation of severe infections and sepsis than established in ammation parameters [7, 8].
