Notes on Xenocriconemella macrodora (Taylor, 1936) and its synonyms (Tylenchida: Criconematidae)

Notes on Xenocriconemella macrodora (Taylor, 1936) and its synonyms (Tylenchida: Criconematidae) Criconema goffarti Volz, 1951, described from soil of a beech-oak forest in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, and Criconemoides juniperi Edward & Misra, 1964, isolated from the rhizosphere of Juniperus macropoda in the high mountains of Uttar Pradesh, India, were synonymised with Criconemoides macrodorus Taylor, 1936, described from an oak forest in Virginia, USA, and subsequently reported from other sites in the USA. This nematode was designated as type species of the subsequently erected genus Xenocriconemella de Grisse & Loof, 1965, namely X. macrodora (Taylor, 1936) de Grisse & Loof, 1965. Lübbers & Zell (1989) studied several ‘ macrodora ’ populations of different geographical origin and came to the conclusion that populations from Germany (including the type locality of C. goffarti ), The Netherlands, Switzerland, UK and South Africa differed in a few morphological characters from the American populations studied and should be considered as representatives of a species separate from macrodora , namely C. goffarti which was described by Volz (1951). As the main differential character, Lübbers & Zell (1989) considered the diam. of the first body annulus: 7.5-9 μm in C. macrodora from the USA vs 6-7 μm in populations considered as C. goffarti .
