When I worked together with the late Paul Speijer on banana nematodes in Uganda in the 1990s and, more re- cently, with Georges Reversat on rice nematodes in the Philippines, I was always impressed with the ‘simple’ methods these seasoned tropical nematologists had devel- oped to conduct their nematological research. With the ex- ception of microscopes, almost every piece of equipment they used could be bought cheaply in the store around the corner. The interesting publications written by these plant nematologists, and their colleagues working under similar circumstances, demonstrate that these ‘simple’ methods can yield interesting results and advance our knowledge of the presence, impact and management of plant-parasitic nematodes in areas where financial resources for spe- cialised laboratories are unavailable. Danny Coyne and his co-authors have now brought many of these methods together in a practical field and laboratory guide.
