At the beginning of the century Racovitza (1913) proposed to create, for this purpose, an interna- tional organization called ª Biospeologica º . In a period of more than 40 years, hundreds of caves were explored on several continents and the faunistic results have been reported in many publications. Soon it became apparent that subter- ranean waters are widely inhabited by old, endemic species, which have their closer relatives in the marine environment. Racovitza, in a metaphorical way, pointed out that caves, being ® lled with numerous ª living fossils º , could be considered as a kind of natural museums.
