INTRODUCTION It is well known that the brine shrimp Artemia salina (L., 1758) has unusual physiological features. One such unique characteristic is that their cysts (shelled eggs) are capable of withstanding long periods of desiccation, during which time the embryo may enter a state of cryptobiosis (Anderson et al., 1970). The Artemia cysts collected from Tuticorin, South India, showed poor hatchability. Besides this the South India strain produces both thin- and thick- shelled eggs.
