INTRODUCTION Secondary sexual characteristics of males of the northern hemisphere group of freshwater crayfish belonging to the family Cambaridae have long been documented (Faxon, 1883; Crocker & Barr, 1968; Hobbs, 1974), with in- dividuals cycling from a reproductive ("Form I") to a non-reproductive condi- tion ("Form II"). These forms are recognised by functional changes in the pleopods on the first somite of the abdomen, and by modifications to the hooks on the ischia of the second, third or fourth pair of pereiopods.
