THE CHROMOSOMES OF IDOTEA BALTHICA BASTERI AUDOUIN (ISOPODA, VALVIFERA) BY MASSIMO TRENTINI and MARIA GRAZIA CORNI Institute of Zoology, University of Bologna, Italy INTRODUCTION During researches on the reproductive biology of Idotea balthica basteri Audouin, 1826 (cf. Corni & Bernabei, in press), we have also started a karyological study on the gametogenesis. The chromosome number (n = 29, 2n = 58) of Idotea balthica (Pallas, 1772) has been studied by Teichmann (1962) and Artault (1977). The karyogram of four Idotea species, with special reference to I. balthica, has been investigated by Salemaa (1985). Males of the subspecies I. balthica basterl have been examined by Vandel (1947); this author was doubtful about the haploid chromosome number n = 29. Besides, Tinturier-Hamelin (1963) demonstrated by means of hybridations that the female in I. balthica basterl is heterogametic (WZ) and the male homogametic (ZZ). Recently, from genetic experiments on I. balthica basterl, sex determina- tion appears to be polyfactorial (Legrand-Hamelin & Legrand, 1982). 1. balthica presents two subspecies (I. balthica balthica (Pallas) and I. balthica tricuspidata Desmarest sensu Dahl, 1916) of North European Seas, and two subspecies (I. balthica basteri and I. balthica stagnea Tinturier-Hamelin, 1960) of the Mediterranean (Gruner, 1965):
