The freshwater crangonyctid amphipod genus Synurella ( = Stygobromus of some authors) in eastern North America comprises a discrete assemblage con- sisting of three species distributed in the Gulf coast and lower Missisippi River valley (S. bifurca (Hay)), the Ohio River valley (S. dentata Hubricht), and along the middle Atlantic Coastal Plain (S. chamberlaini (Ellis)). The range of S. chamberlaini was reported by Holsinger (1972) as including eastern South and North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Recently, S. chamberlaini was col- lected from two localities in southeastern New England. Immatures were first found in August 1985, in Worden Pond, South Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. Subsequent collecting in the same area the following April produced a large series of adults. Collections were made in flooded areas along the Worden Pond shoreline, in red maple and white cedar swamps situated on the Buzzards Bay moraine, and in a small brook draining the moraine and flowing into Worden Pond.
