306 THE GENUS CYMODOCE LEACH (ISOPODA, FLABELLIFERA) IN THE NORTH AEGEAN SEA BY C. DOUNAS and ATH. KOUKOURAS Department of Zoology, University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece In 1970, a research program on the qualitative composition of the benthic fauna of the North Aegean Sea was started. In some of the samplings carried out in that period (fig. 1) 147 isopod specimens were collected, belonging to 7 species of the genus Cymodoce. These specimens come from various habitats of the infralittoral zone and from depths down to 14 m. Our knowledge on the ecology and distribution of this genus in the western Mediterranean is extensive, especially after the review made by Dumay (1971, 1972a, 1972b, 1972c, 1972d). On the contrary, in the eastern Mediterranean it is very limited and concerns only the species C. truncata (cf. Monod, 1933; Lar- wood, 1940; Kocatas, 1976), C. tuberculata (cf. Vamvakas, 1971; Geldiay & Kocatas, 1972), C. emarginata and C. spinoza (cf. Geldiay & Kocatas, 1972). During our research in the North Aegean Sea we have found 4 more species (C. pilosa, C. tattersalli, C. erythraea, C. hanseni). Thereby, the number of species of this genus known from the eastern Mediterranean becomes 8;
