Parhyale Basrensis, a New Species of Talitrid Amphipod From the Shutt Al-Arab Region, Iraq

Parhyale Basrensis, a New Species of Talitrid Amphipod From the Shutt Al-Arab Region, Iraq PARHYALE BASRENSIS, A NEW SPECIES OF TALITRID AMPHIPOD FROM THE SHUTT AL-ARAB REGION, IRAQ BY SALMAN D. SALMAN Marine Science Centre, University of Basrah, Basrah, Iraq INTRODUCTION The amphipod fauna of Iraq has not received much attention. This article presents the description of a common species of Talitroidea found in Shutt al- Arab River, in the south of Iraq. Parhyale basrensis n. sp. lives both in the inter- tidal zone, underneath stones or vegetation, or inside burrows made by isopods, and among vegetation in the channels which open into the river. The new species seems to be closely related to Parhyale hawaiensis (Dana). MATERIAL EXAMINED Holotype male; paratypes 27 females, 37 males, 6 immatures, intertidal under stones, Abu-al-Kaseeb, 25.IX.1982; 16 males, 17 females, 2 immatures, intertidal, inside burrows of isopods, Al-Chibassy, 16.X.1973. DESCRIPTION Parhyale basrensis sp. nov. (figs. 1-4) Male. - Total length 8.50 mm. Lateral cephalic lobe strongly projecting, submammiliform, but obliquely subtruncate apically; head length to depth subequal, head longer than 1 st peraeomere. Eye of moderate size. Coxae 2-4 with protruding, obtuse posterior tooth. Epimera 2-3 weakly protruding posteroventrally. Antenna 1 reaching well beyond posterior margin of 2nd peraeomere, and about 1/2 length of antenna http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill
