Cfa., México Peu de groupes d'Isopodes ont ete plus intensivement etudies et sont pour- tant aussi mal connus que les Sphaeromatid6s. Une raison importante semble etre la m6connaisance de leur biologie et le fait qu'ils pr6sentent souvent un remarquable dimorphisme sexuel ? 1'etat adulte. La premiere revision syst6matique complete de la famille a ete faite par Hansen (1905). Il y reconnait trois sous-familles: _ les Sphaerominae (qui cor- respondent aux actuels Sphaeromatidae), les Limnoriinae et les Plakarthrii- nae, ces deux derniers groupes 6tant actuellement s6par6s de la famille. R6cemment Iverson (1982) a publi6 une mise au point ou il retrace 1'histoire du groupe et propose quelques nouveaux noms, tout en respectant le caractere fondamental reconnu par Hansen, la structure des pleopodes. Cette caracteris- tique avait permit de reconnaitre trois "groupes" a l'intérieur de la sous famille Sphaerominae: les Eubranchiata, les Hemibranchiata et les Platybran- chiata (Hansen, 1905).
