LARVAL DEVELOPMENT OF PETROLISTHES TONSORIUS HAIG, 1960, UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS (DECAPODA, PORCELLANIDAE) BY NILA C. PELLEGRINI and ALEJANDRA L. GAMBA Departamento de Biologia de Organismos, Universidad Simon Bolivar, Apdo. 80659, Caracas, Venezuela INTRODUCTION Petrolisthes tonsorius is a diminutive porcellanid crab, common throughout the North-central Venezuela coast. Adults occur beneath rocks and stones at the high tide level of rocky shore lines and stony beaches. The present study describes and illustrates the complete larval development of P. tonsorius under laboratory conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ovigerous females of P. tonsorius were collected beneath stones at the high tide level from the Bahia of Patanemo, Edo. Carabobo, Venezuela. One group, comprising females with eggs at various stages of maturity, was fixed in 10% formalin.
