THE EFFECT OF SIZE RANKING ON THE MOULTING CYCLE OF JUVENILE STAGES OF THE FRESHWATER PRAWN MACROBRACHIUM ROSENBERGII (DE MAN) WHEN REARED INDIVIDUALLY AND IN PAIRS (DECAPODA, CARIDEA) BY ZIVA RA'ANAN Department of Environmental Biology, Life Science Institute, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel INTRODUCTION The freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) demonstrates substantial variations in sizes and growth rates of individuals soon after metamorphosis of the larvae into the post-larval form (Wickins, 1972; Forster & Beard, 1974). Although the average growth is inversely related to density, the wide variation in growth rates is believed to be induced primarily by intrin- sic rather than environmental factors (Sandifer & Smith, 1975; Ra'anan, 1982). The characteristic positively skewed size distribution curve, obtained for juvenile populations (Cohen et al., 1981) can be divided into two main parts: the bulk of the population which includes about 75 to 80% of the total popula- tion, and the "tail" which represents the fast growing individuals. This group of fast growers, henceforth termed "jumpers", demonstrates growth rates which can be up to fifteen times higher than that demonstrated by the bulk of the population (henceforth termed "non-jumpers").
