China has a large number of rivers, lakes, ponds, and other freshwater bodies and probably has the longest history of freshwater aquaculture. Yet there were only a few fragmentary studies on freshwater crustaceans, an important link in the food cycle of aquaculture, before 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. During the 1950's, a long-term and wide-ranging survey of freshwater crustaceans in China was undertaken. This resulted in a proliferation of publications in the late 1950's and early 1960's. However, most scientific research came to an abrupt and complete halt during the era of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977), studies on freshwater crustaceans not excepted.
