COMPETITION AND HABITAT PARTITIONING BY THE GIANT FRESHWATER PRAWN MACROBRACHIUM ROSENBERGII (DE MAN) (DECAPODA, PALAEMONIDAE) 1) BY JOHN B. PEEBLES Department of Genetics, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. INTRODUCTION lVlacrobrachium ro.renbergii (De Man) is a large freshwater crustacean occupy- ing streams and rivers in the Indo-Pacific region (Raman, 1964, 1966; Ling, 1969). Its distribution extends from Eastern Pakistan (Ling, 1969) to Palau (McVey, 1975 ) and Papua, New Guinea (Johnson, 1960). The life cycle has been studied by a number of investigators and generally it is thought that females release larvae in brackish estuarine waters, where the larvae mature and meta- morphose into benthic postlarvae which migrate upstream (John, 1957; Ling & Merican, 1961; Ling, 1969). Little is actually known about the behavioral events controlling the animal's movements and dispersion patterns. Recently M. ro.renbergii has been successfully commercially aquacultured. With the advent of complete control over every 'stage in the animal's life cycle investi- gators have been able to examine questions basic to the understanding of crustacean behavioral ecology that before, were difficult or impossible to address. In M. ro.renbergii and other Crustacea, cannibalism has been correlated with ecdysis (Bovbjerg, 1953, 1956; Momot, 1967; Forster & Beard, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill
