HYBRIDIZATION BETWEEN CRAYFISH OF THE GENUS ORCONECTES: MORPHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE (DECAPODA, CAMBARIDAE) BY GREGORY M. CAPELLI College of William and Mary, Biology Dept., Williamsburg, Virginia, U.S.A. 23185 and JUDITH F. CAPELLI Williamsburg, Virginia, U.S.A. 23185 INTRODUCTION Hybridization between any crayfish species has not been conclusively demon- strated. Crocker ( 1957 ) briefly described morphological evidence that suggested possible hybridization involving Orconectes pi,opinquus (Girard) and O. limo.ru.r (Rafinesque), O. propinquus and O. obJcurus (Hagen), and Cambaru.r robu.rtu.r Girard and C. bartonii ( Fabricius ) . On the basis of circumstantial evidence, Crocker & Barr (1968) suggested that O. proPinquus hybridized with O. obscures and O. rusticus ( Girard ) in Ontario; no detailed analysis of morphological charac- teristics was presented, however. The three species described in our work, O. propinquuJ} O. virili.r ( Hagen ) , and O. ru.rticu.r, have long been considered distinct and, except as noted above, non- interbreeding. They are sympatric in many areas, with at least two of the three often occurring in the same collections (Crocker & Barr, 1968; Capelli, unpubl.; Berrill, 1978). O. rusticus has been introduced in northern Wisconsin, and appears to be dis- placing O. virilis and O. propinquus ( cf . Capelli,
