FURTHER OBSERVATIONS ON TYPTON DENTATUS FUJINO & MIYAKE (DECAPODA, PALAEMONIDAE) BY A. J. BRUCE Heron Island Research Station, Gladstone, Queensland, Australia, 4680 Typton dentatus Fujino & Miyake is known only by the holotype and allotype specimens, collected from a sponge from Ukashi, Yoron-jima Island in the Ryukyu Islands (Fujino & Miyake, 1969). These specimens unfortunately lacked both pairs of second pereiopods so that the species could not be fully described. The species is remarkable for the morphology of its mouthparts, which are greatly different from those of all other species of the genus. It has been suggested that these differences, if combined with second pereiopods of a type different from that usually found in Typton, might necessitate the designation of a new genus (Bruce, 1979). The mouthparts show a particularly close resemblance to an aberrant species of Onycocaris, and it seemed possible that T', dentatu.r might also have Onycocari.r- type second pereiopods. The discovery of two further specimens, a male-female pair, is therefore of special interest, as it enables the description of the species to be completed and its systematic position more accurately assessed, as well as providing further details on its ecology http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill

Abstract

NOTES ON SOME INDO-PACIFIC PONTONIINAE, XXXIV. The discovery of two further specimens, a male-female pair, is therefore of special interest, as it enables the description of the species to be completed and its systematic position more accurately assessed, as well as providing further details on its ecology
