Wales, U.K. Two specimens of Cirolana microphthalma previously known only from four specimens collected off the northern coasts of Norway (Hansen, 1905), were recently collected from very fine sand at a depth of ca. 82 m in the North Sea (56°24'N 02°07'E). This species was first described by Hoek (1882) and is figured by Sars (1899) who, together with Dollfus (1903), expanded the original brief description. Based on these descriptions Hansen (1905) was able to construct a key which separates C. microPhthalma from other European species of Cirolana. However, previous descriptions were too incomplete to allow adequate separation of this species from the eastern Atlantic species C. coticharum Stimpson, C. polita Stimpson, and C. im pressa Harger, with which it has been confused (Hansen, 1905). Present material consisting of a Y (30 mm) and juvenile (10.5 mm) has been figured to display additional characters which may be used to separate these species (fig. 1).
