Preliminary Diagnosis of a New Genus of Marine Isopod (Flabellifera, Cirolanidae)

Preliminary Diagnosis of a New Genus of Marine Isopod (Flabellifera, Cirolanidae) 112 YAMAGUTI, S., 1963. Parasitic Copepoda and Branchiura of fishes. Ergasilidae: 26-41, 442-479. (John Wiley, New-York-London-Sydney). YIN, W. Y., 1956. Studies on the Ergasilidae (parasitic Copepoda) from the freshwater fishes of China. Acta hydrobiol. Sinica, 2: 209-270. PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS OF A NEW GENUS OF MARINE ISOPOD (FLABELLIFERA, CIROLANIDAE) BY N. L. BRUCE Department of Zoology, University of Queensland, St. Lucia, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 4067 Examination of sandy beaches in Queensland revealed the presence of several species of cirolanid isopod that could not satisfactorily be placed in any of the existing genera. One of these is the species Cirolana concinna Hale, 1925. A diagnosis of a new genus is given here, and a fuller treatment of the genus is in preparation. Pseudolana gen. nov. Diagnosis. - Cirolanidae with rostral point minute or absent; frontal lamina linear; maxilliped with single coupling hook on endite. Pleopod 2 of male with appendix masculina arising midway along inner margin of endopod; pleopods 3-5 glabrous in both sexes, and the protopod of pleopods 1-5 with external margin formed into a lobe. All pleon exposed with lateral margins free. Type species. - Pseudoldna concinna (Hale, 1 92 5 ) . Remarks. - The diagnosis allows ready separation from most cirolanid genera. The genus Excirolana is most readily distinguished by the dilated rostral point, and in many cases a broad frontal lamina. REFERENCES HALE, H. M., 1925. Review of Australian isopods of the cymothoid group. 1. Trans. R. Soc. South Australia, 49: 128-185. INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON ZOOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE The Commission hereby gives six months notice of the possible use of its plenary powers in the following cases, published in Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature, vol. 35 part 4 on 31st May 1979 (case no. 2235) and vol. 36 part 1 on lst July 1979 (case no. 2263), both dealing with Crustacea, and would welcome comments and advice on it from interested zoologists.
