Temperature Preference of the Blind Prawn, Typhlocaris Galilea Calman (Decapoda, Caridea ) 1)

Temperature Preference of the Blind Prawn, Typhlocaris Galilea Calman (Decapoda, Caridea ) 1) TEMPERATURE PREFERENCE OF THE BLIND PRAWN, TYPHLOCARIS GALILEA CALMAN (DECAPODA, CARIDEA ) 1) BY M. TSURNAMAL Department of Zoology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel INTRODUCTION Annandale (1912) and Annandale & Kemp (1913) were the first to describe the small population of the blind prawn, T'yphlocari.r galilea Calman in an octagonal pool at Tabgha, on the northern shore of Lake Tiberias. These authors considered the small pool (diam. 20 m) as the only locality of T. galilea, but Tsurnamal & Por (1968) mentioned that a much larger population of the blind prawns inhabits the water-filled cavities of the subterranean water tract of a spring feeding the aforementioned pool at Tabgha. In a recent paper, Tsurnamal (1978) described the biology and ecology of T. galilea and brought also a detailed description of the epigeic and the hypogeal habitats of the prawn and of its distribution within these habitats. Three different springs flow into the En-Nur octagonal pool at Tabgha. The main spring (spring A) is the most saline and its chlorinity fluctuates seasonally in the range of 2300-3000 mg Cl/I, while the temperature of its water is always 29-30° C. The water also contains considerable amounts of dissolved Hydrogen http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill
