Abstract

222 head then penetrates the ground, and blocks the retreat of shrimp and fish into the burrows. The whole apparatus and burrow is surrounded by a fine net, held up by floats and weights. The apparatus is operated by a SCUBA diver when the shrimp is furthest away from the entrance. On blocking the burrow, the fish rushes into the surrounding net or dive together with the shrimp into the sediment where they can bc collected by a hand net. This technique has proved to be successful, about 70% of the time, both shrimp and fish being collected undamaged and successfully used for behavioural studies.
