An Occurrence of Heterophlias Seclusus Shoemaker, 1933 (Amphipoda, Phliantidae) At Beaufort, North Carolina, U.S.a

An Occurrence of Heterophlias Seclusus Shoemaker, 1933 (Amphipoda, Phliantidae) At Beaufort,... 103 NOTES AND NEWS AN OCCURRENCE OF HETEROPHLIAS SECLUSUS SHOEMAKER, 1933 (AMPHIPODA, PHLIANTIDAE) AT BEAUFORT, NORTH CAROLINA, U.S.A. BY WALTER G. NELSON Duke University Marine Laboratory, Beaufort, North Carolina, U.S.A. The occurrence of Hetero phlia.r .reclu.ru.r on the coast of Brazil has recently been reported by Wakabara & Pereira Leite (1977). They point out that this species had only been previously reported from its type locality, Dry Tortugas, Florida at 24°37'N (Shoemaker, 1933). Two specimens of this species have been taken from samples of algae growing intertidally on hard substrata near Beaufort, North Carolina (34°43'N), which provides a considerable northward range extension for Heterophlia.r The first specimen was collected in March 1975 from Shark Shoal Jetty, a rock jetty located in the Beaufort estuary. The second specimen was collected near the Duke University Marine Laboratory dock in August 1977. This specimen was a female 4.1 mm in length. This species is undoubtedly extremely rare in the Beaufort region given the small number of specimens found despite a fairly intensive sampling for amphipods carried out in this area during the past several years. If Hetero phlia.r seclusus is indeed a tropical form as sug- gested by Wakabara & Pereira Leite (1977), it is highly probable that Beaufort, occurring as it does just south of the faunal province break at Cape Hatteras, is the northern limit for this species. Should Pariphinotu.r tuckeri Kunkel, 1910 (described from Bermuda at 32°20'N) prove to be a synonym of Heterophlias seclusus as discussed by Wakabara & Pereira Leite (1977), the occurrence of Heterophlias seclusus at Beaufort would still be a moderate range extension north- ward. I would like to acknowledge the aid of B. McGovern in obtaining the March 1975 specimen, and the assistance and encouragement of Dr. E. L. Bousfield. The August 1977 specimen has been deposited in the Duke University Marine Labora- tory Reference Museum. LITERATURE CITED KUNKEL, B. W., 1910. The Amphipoda of Bermuda. Trans. Connecticut Acad.
