THOR MARGUITAE SP. NOV., A NEW HIPPOLYTID SHRIMP FROM HERON ISLAND, AUSTRALIA BY A. J. BRUCE Heron Island Research Station, Gladstone, Queensland, Australia Only two of the five known Indo-West Pacific species of the genus Thor Kings- ley, 1878, have so far been recorded from Australian waters. The discovery of an undescribed species from shallow water on the reef flat of Heron Island is there- fore of interest. The ecology of the Indo-West Pacific species of Thor is not well known. The larger species, T. ämboillensis (De Man) and T..rpino.ru.r Boone are brightly coloured and associated with coelenterates. T. pa.rch?li.r (Heller) and T. maldiven.ri.r Borradaile are small and cryptically coloured, and appear to be free-living. The present specimens were all found in a single coral colony and are comparatively large and seem cryptically coloured in relation to this habitat, while being quite brightly coloured when seen in isolation. This new species differs from those previously named mainly in the morphology of the rostrum and the spinula- tion of the ambulatory pereiopods, and is now named in honour of the collector.
