A NEW GENUS AND SPECIES OF CALANOID COPEPOD FROM SRI LANKA (CEYLON) BY C. H. FERNANDO and GEORGE HANEK Department of Biology, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada INTRODUCTION While examining plankton samples from Sri Lanka we came across a very large diaptomid which on closer study appears to belong to a genus hitherto undescribed. Fortunately, the large number of specimens available enabled us to study this material in detail. This species belongs to the sub-family Diaptominae but has a number of unique features which make it necessary to assign it to a new genus. Since the material was collected in Ceylon we have designed the new genus Zey!anodiap- tomu.r gen. nov. The new species is named Zeylanodiaptomus papillopedis gen. et sp. nov. One of the most obvious features is the presence of spinous papillae instead of spines on the outer side of the three exopod segments of legs 2-4. We have described and figured the adult male and female. MATERIALS AND METHODS The plankton samples were part of an extensive survey on the freshwater zoo- plankton of Sri Lanka. The material was collected from a small shallow lake (Sinhalese = Rambewa) Nochchiyagama, North Central Province, Sri Lanka
