STUDIES ON A NEW FAIRY SHRIMP FROM THE PLAYA LAKES OF WEST TEXAS (BRANCHIOPODA ANOSTRACA, THAMNOCEPHALIDAE) BY STANLEY L. SISSOM Southwest Texas State University, Biology Department, San Marcos, Texas 78666, U.S.A. In the Llano Estacado or staked plains region of New Mexico and Texas there are many hundreds of small playa lakes ranging in size from only a few meters to as much as a kilometer in diameter. These playas are usually very shallow and the depth of water in them is a function of rainfall, humidity and basin structure. They dry during the summer and fill with the fall rains. Such a setting is conducive to the development of many enormous populations of Branchiopoda. Snowdrop and Lake Gutherie are two such playas in Lynn County, Texas, which has some 499 mapped playas within its boundaries. These playas have attracted several investiga- tors and it is from these two playas that the new species described below was discovered. Branchinella sublettei n. sp. Male (figs 1-5). - Total length including cercopods varying from 6.3 to 10.2 mm (average 7.16 mm).
