INTRODUCTION There has been no systematic study of the cumacean fauna of the Pacific coast of North America between northern Washington (Lie, 1969, 1971) and Point Conception, southern California (Barnard & Given, 1961; Given, 1961, 1964) to date, and only a few scattered records are available (Calman, 1912) for this region. The present paper initiates the process of filling this gap in our knowledge. Because of their particularly mobile nature cumaceans are seldom captured in large numbers by conventional bottom-sampling techniques (Corey, 1970), or perhaps more accurately, the samples are seldom accurate quantitative representa- tions of the fauna. In the present study SCUBA was used to obtain each benthic sample by carefully pressing an inverted 14 cm diameter plastic Petri dish ( 1 . 2 5 cm deep) into the substrate, sliding the lid underneath and securing the package with a rubber band.
