SHIRLEY Department of Biology, Texas A&I University, Kingsville, Texas 78363, U.S.A. 1) A specimen of Planes cyaneiis Dana, 1852, was found alive in a piece of bamboo among the tidal flotsam on North Padre Island, Texas, U.S.A., in the vicinity of 27°00'N 97°23'W, by Mr. Al Bell of Texas A&I University, on 11 March 1972. Dr. Fenner A. Chace, Jr., of the Smithsonian Institution verified the identification of the specimen. The genus Planes has not previously been reported from the Gulf of Mexico. Chace (1951) remarked on the apparent absence of Planes from the Gulf of Mexico west of the Dry Tortugas, despite its relative abundance from the Straits of Florida eastward and its occurrence in the Caribbean area. Hedgpeth and Archer informed Chace that they had never encountered the crab although they had searched through great masses of Sargas.w1il from the Gulf (Chace, 1951).
