SOME NEW CUMACEA FROM DEEP WATER IN THE ATLANTIC 1) BY N. S. JONES Marine Biological Station (University of Liverpool), Port Erin, Isle of Man, Great Britain INTRODUCTION Since 1960 the research vessels of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have undertaken a number of cruises in the Atlantic Ocean to collect benthic animals in deep water by means of anchor dredges and epibenthic sled dredges (Sanders, Hessler & Hampson, 1965; Sanders & Hessler, 1969). Further collec- tions have been made by R.R.S. "Discovery II" and M. V. "Sarsia" and by N.O. "Jean Charcot". Examination of the Cumacea from these cruises, which are continuing, has not yet been completed but so far more than 200 species have been identified of which more than half are at present undescribed. These are nearly all from depths of more than 200 m extending down to more than 5000 m, and covering a number of areas in the temperate North Atlantic and across the Equator, especially on transects from Gay Head to Bermuda and from Dakar to Recife. It is hoped that some areas will be sampled eventually throughout the whole of the Atlantic. Description of the new species will be shared with
