309 NOTES AND NEWS NEW RECORD FOR ELMINIUS MODESTUS DARWIN, 1854, IN WESTERN SCOTLAND (CIRRIPEDIA, THORACICA) BY H. BARNES and R. L. STONE The Dunstaffnage Marine Research Laboratory, Oban, Argyll, Scotland, Great Britain The spread of the Australasian species Elminitls modesttls Darwin along the European coast has been extremely well documented (see Barnes & Barnes, 1960, 1969, 1972 for summaries of the present position). Crisp (1958) recorded Elminius from Stranraer in Loch Ryan, this population having existed since 1950. Connell (1955) found a single individual at Millport and Powell (1960) recorded two further individuals; Barnes & Barnes (1961) found that by 1959 the species was more abundant locally and more widespread in the Clyde Sea area than was indicated by previous records. Crisp's (1960) record for the Gareloch seems to be the most northerly occurrence on the west coast of Scotland: on the Scottish east coast Jones (1961) has recorded it in the Firth of Forth and at the entrance of the Firth of Tay. A small individual, 3 mm basal diameter was first (September 1971) found on panels exposed on a raft for several months in Dunstaffnage Bay near Oban. Subsequently small (5.5 mm basal diameter) individual animals
