INTRODUCTION The genus Pagurus includes many species spread all over the world. A few species in this genus have been studied, but most of them not in great detail. The only species for which development of appendages and other detailed morphology have been studied from reared larvae are P. marshi Benedict (Provenzano & Rice, 1964), P. kulkarni Sankolli (Shenoy, 1967), P. exilis (Benedict) (Scelzo & Boschi, 1969), P. alatus Fabricius (Bookhout, 1972), and P. longicarpus Say (Roberts, 1970). Pagurus prideauxi has a wide geographical distribution: it is found on the eastern Atlantic, from the west coast of Norway to Cape Verde Islands; through- out the Mediterranean Sea and in the Adriatic Sea. Although Issel (1910), Jackson (1913) and Webb (1921) described the first zoeal stage of P. prideauxi, MacDonald, Pike & Williamson (1957) found their descriptions did not permit the identifica- tion of the first stage of this species.
