SOME LARVAL STAGES OF PET ALOMERA WILSONI (FULTON & GRANT, 1902) (DECAPODA, DROMIIDAE) BY ROBERT G. WEAR Department of Zoology, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand . INTRODUCTION Petalomera wil.roni (Fulton & Grant, 1902), commonly known as the "hairy sponge crab", is widely distributed throughout the North Island of New Zealand, and occurs on rough bottom habitats between the lower tidal and 55 fathoms (Dell, 1968). Beyond New Zealand, the species has been recorded from Australia (Hale, 1927), from South Africa (Barnard, 1950), and Japan. In an earlier publication (Wear, 1965) planktonic larvae of a dromiid species were recorded from the Wellington area, and provisionally attributed to Petalomera wil.roni on the evidence that this was the only dromiid crab recorded from New Zealand (Wear, 1965: 15-16; 1967: 522). On 25 February 1968, one ovigerous female was dredged from a bryozoan bottom in 9 fathoms, one mile east of Mana Island, Wellington. The female was returned to the Victoria University of Wellington Marine Laboratory where the larvae hatched 26 February 1968. The identity of planktonic larvae was thus verified, and the pre-zoea larval stage obtained. Larvae occur in the plankton throughout the year, especially during spring and autumn, but they
