221 INDICATION OF A NEOTYPE FOR CANCER MANTIS L., 1758 (STOMATOPODA, SQUILLIDAE) BY L. B. HOLTHUIS Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, The Netherlands Under the plenary powers of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature the species Cancer mantis Linnaeus, 1758 (Syst. Nat., (ed. 10) 1: 633) has been made the type of the genus Squilla Fabricius, 1787 (Mantissa Ins., 1: 333). The name Squilla Fabricius, 1787, was placed on the Official List of Generic Names as name no. 619, the name mantis L., 1758, being inserted in the Official List of Specific Names in Zoology as name no. 150 (see Opinion 186, 1945, Opin. Decl. Int. Comm. zool. Nomencl., 3 (5): 53-64, and Direction 1, 1954, Opin. Decl. Int. Comm. zool. Nomencl., 3 (30): 401-416). All these measures were taken by the International Commission to secure the stability and uniformity of usage of both the generic name Squilla and the specific name manti.r. During the preparation of a critical catalogue and reference bibliography of the stomatopod Crustacea of the world for "Crustaceorum Catalogus" it was found that the original description of Cancer mantis L. is based upon more than one species and that an irresponsible, but perfectly legal, type
