The Genus Branchipodopsis in Asia (Anostraca)

The Genus Branchipodopsis in Asia (Anostraca) NOTES AND NEWS THE GENUS BRANCHIPODOPSIS IN ASIA (ANOSTRACA) BY RICHARD HARTLAND-ROWE Biology Department, The University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada Twelve of the fourteen species of Branchipodop.ri.r are confined to Africa, and the remaining two species which have been described are both Asiatic. Branchi- podo p.ri.r affinis was described in 1901 by G. O. Sars from material collected in Mongolia, and has since been recorded from Manchuria and Kashmir. In 1936 Smirnov described the second Asiatic species, B. terpogo.r.riani, irom material collected in Armenia (Sardarabad). Smirnov remarks on the very close similarity between the two species, pointing out that the two differ only in the detailed form of the antenna and antennal process of the male. In the British Museum (Natural History) I have seen a male and a female Branchipodop.ri.r from Kashmir (B.M. Reg. No. 1921.11.8.1-2). The male, although differing in a few minor respects from both of the pre- viously described species, is in some respects intermediate in form between these species, notably in the form of the antenna which possesses features of both species. Thus the antenna is more slender and less curved than in B, affinis (being as described in B. terpogo.r.riani by http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill
