BRUCE Division of Fisheries and Oceanography, C.S.I.R.O., Redcliffe, Queensland 4020, Australia Although shrimps of the subfamily Pontoniinae are now known to live in association with many types of marine invertebrates, very few have so far been reported from the Alcyonacea. During a brief visit to the island of Remire in the Amirante Islands in the western Indian Ocean during 1966 some specimens of a small pontoniid shrimp were collected from a large alcyonarian found on the . coral reef around the island. Subsequent examination of the specimens showed that they could not be referred to any of the genera of the Pontoniinae so far described. A new genus is now erected for the inclusion of these specimens. Propontonia gen. nov. Definition. - Small commensal pontoniid shrimps associated with alcyonarians. Body normal in shape. Well developed, compressed dentate rostrum. Carapace smooth with antennal and hepatic spines present. Abdominal segments smooth, with first five pleura rounded. Telson elongate, with two pairs of dorsal spines and three pairs of terminal spines. Eyes well developed with globular cornea. Antennule
