Sex Ratios and Distribution of Spawning King Crabs in Alitak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska (Decapoda Anomura, Lithodidae)

SEX RATIOS AND DISTRIBUTION OF SPAWNING KING CRABS IN ALITAK BAY, KODIAK ISLAND, ALASKA (DECAPODA ANOMURA, LITHODIDAE) BY GEORGE W. GRAY, Jr. and GUY C. POWELL Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Biological Research, Kodiak, Alaska, U.S.A. . INTRODUCTION A trawl survey of Alitak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, was undertaken May 10 to 18, 1962 for three reasons; to locate spawning areas, determine the relationship between abundance and distribution of juvenile and adult king crabs, Parall'thodes camtschatica (Tilesius ) , of both sexes, and to investigate ratios of sex, shell age, and carapace length. Alitak Bay was chosen for the study because it has been the major producer of king crabs in the Kodiak Island area since 1953, with the result that the older age classes of males have been heavily cropped (Gray et al., un- published ). With the effects of this selective cropping as yet unknown, knowledge of the breeding areas and an index of sex and age class ratios were needed for future work in this intensively exploited fishery. Observations in the Bering Sea indicate that only males which fail to undergo ecdysis contribute to reproduction, therefore the Alitak study was also designed http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill
