Brachiella Chevreuxii Van Beneden, 1891 (Copepoda, Lernaeopodidae); a Taxonomic Problem BRACHIELLA CHEVREUXII VAN BENEDEN, 1891 (COPEPODA, LERNAEOPODIDAE); A TAXONOMIC PROBLEM BY Z. KABATA Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen, Great Britain INTRODUCTION Brachiella chevreuxii, a lernaeopodid copepod, was described by Van Beneden in 1891. Five females and two males of this parasite had been collected by Chevreux in the Bay of Dakar, Senegal, W. Africa, reputedly from a dogfish ("un Squale" ). The distinguishing features of the species are four very long posterior processes and an almost equally long genital process. A genital process of such length had not been known previously. So far as is known to the author, there are no subsequent records of B. chevreuxii in the literature. However, another and very similar species, B. macrura, has been described by Wilson (1920) from Lutjanus griseus (L.) (identified by Wilson as Neomaeni.r fulgens) taken in the Congo area. Subsequent records of B. macrura came from west African waters (Brian, 1939; Capart, 1953, 1959) and from the Atlantic seaboard of North America (Bere, 1936; Causey, 1953). These records were quoted in several other publications. All recorded hosts of B. macrura belong to the related percomorph families: Lutjanidae, Pomadasyidae and Sciaenidae (9 species in all). ..
