Observations On the Genus Xenanthura (Isopoda, Anthuridae)

Observations On the Genus Xenanthura (Isopoda, Anthuridae) OBSERVATIONS ON THE GENUS XENANTHURA (ISOPODA, ANTHURIDAE) BY N. KRISHNA PILLAI Marine Biological Laboratory, Trivandrum 7, India The genus Xenanthura includes three species, X. brevitel.ron Barnard, 1925, X. orientals Barnard, 1935, and X. lineari.r Pillai, 1954. The first species was col- lected in the West Indies and the other two in brackish-water localities in Kerala, India. My collection includes specimens of both X. orientals and X. lineari.r and a comparative study of these has shown that the existing definition of the genus is inadequate in certain respects. Hence a revised definition of the genus and detailed descriptions of X. orientalls and X. linearis are presented. Xenanthura Barnard, 1925 Xenanthura Barnard, 1925: 138; Barnard, 1935: 307; Pillai, 1954: 3. Definition. - Body slender and subcylindrical, dorsal surface without sculp- turing. Cephalon short, with distinct rostrum, third peraeon segment shorter than second and fourth, pleon long, with six subsimilar segments. Telson short, mem- branous, apex truncate, with four setae. Antenna 1 with a two- to six-segmented flagellum, brush-like or not in male, antenna 2 with a six- to seven-segmented flagellum, last peduncular segment with a two- to four-segmented exopod (second- ary flagellum) and two to three stout brush-like setae.
