Candacia Ketchumi, a New Calanoid Copepod From the North-Western Part of the Sargasso Sea 1) CANDACIA KETCHUMI, A NEW CALANOID COPEPOD FROM THE NORTH-WESTERN PART OF THE SARGASSO SEA 1) BY GEORGE D. GRICE Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution There are presently several investigations at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution concerned with the biology and chemistry of marine plankton, one of which is the analysis of zooplankton samples. These samples are obtained periodically from a series of collecting stations extending from the coastal waters off New York to Sargasso Sea waters near Bermuda. The new copepod described herein was found while examining certain of the Sargasso Sea collections. Seven described species of Candacia have to date been found in these samples, C. armata (Boeck) has been observed primarily in collections from stations sit- uated in continental shelf and slope waters. C. curta (Dana) has been detected only in Gulf Stream samples. C. aethio pica (Dana), C. bi.rPinosa (Claus) and C..rim plex (Giesbrecht) have appeared in one sample from a station located on the seaward side of the continental shelf-edge and in several collections from the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea.
