An Hermaphrodite Specimen of the Spider Crab Hy as Coarctat Us Leach

An Hermaphrodite Specimen of the Spider Crab Hy as Coarctat Us Leach AN HERMAPHRODITE SPECIMEN OF THE SPIDER CRAB HY AS COARCTAT US LEACH BY R. G. HARTNOLL Marine Biological Station, Port Erin, Isle of Man. INTRODUCTION During the year from October 1958 to November 1959 about 2,500 specimens of Hya.r coarctatu.r were examined, and one hermaphrodite individual was found. This was dredged 6.5 km (4 miles) south of Spanish Head (Isle of Man) on 15 October 1959 in 53 m (29 fathoms). The bottom in this area consists of typical Modiolus epifauna ( Jones, 195 1 ) . It has a carapace length of 22 mm, and appears to be the only record of a brachyuran with both male and female sexual systems present on both sides of the body. Previously a number of forms of hermaphroditism have been observed in the Decapoda, and these are summarised below. Some species are normally protan- drous hermaphrodites-Calocari.r macandreae Bell ( ?Uollebaek, 1909), Lysmata seticaudata Risso (Spitschakoff, 1912) and a number of pandalid prawns (Aoto, 1952; Allen, 1959). The other records are of non-functional hermaphrodites in otherwise dioecious species. The internal organs only may be affected, and such cases are found in Gebia major de Haan (Ishikawa, 1885), Upogebia .rtellata Mont.
