The isopod Parachiridotea mediterranea Roman, 1991 (Valvifera, Chaetiliidae) in the Ebro delta (Iberian Peninsula)

The isopod Parachiridotea mediterranea Roman, 1991 (Valvifera, Chaetiliidae) in the Ebro delta... The family Chaetiliidae Dana, 1849 includes twelve genera (Poore, 2001), of which only Saduriella Holthuis, 1964 has been recorded from the Iberian Peninsula (Holthuis, 1964; Baldó et al., 2000). The genus Parachiridotea was described by Daguerre de Hureaux & Elkaïm (1972) and the type species ( P. panousei Daguerre de Hureaux & Elkaïm, 1972) redescribed by Elkaïm & Daguerre de Hureaux (1976) from material collected in the Bou Regreg estuary in Rabat (Morocco, E. Atlantic). Bellan-Santini et al. (1984) cited P. panousei from the Rhone delta, N.W. Mediterranean. Subsequently, Roman (1991) reported the Rhone delta individuals as a new species, P. mediterranea . This is the only species of Chaetiliidae found in the Mediterranean Sea, although it was not included in Junoy & Castelló’s (2003) catalogue of species of Isopoda from the Iberian Peninsula. In this note, two specimens of Parachiridotea are reported from the Catalan coast (N.W. Mediterranean). The specimens were collected from a surf zone of Trabucador beach (Ebro delta; 40°37′N 0°44′E) at a depth of 1.5 m (fig. 1A). Sampling was carried out on 15 August 2011, with a hand-held net (mesh-size: 500 μm). Abstract

This is the only species of Chaetiliidae found in the Mediterranean Sea, although it was not included in Junoy & Castelló’s (2003) catalogue of species of Isopoda from the Iberian Peninsula.
