Later, this specimen was identiŽ ed as Brachycarpus crosnieri Bruce, 1998, a recently described species based on a single ovigerous female from the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia. Brachycarpus crosnieri is readily distinguished from other congeneric species by the considerably longer carpus of the second pereiopod (Bruce, 1998). The senior author captured a further female of B. crosnieri from a submarine cave at Hachijo-jima Island, Izu Islands, Japan.
