At the time of the start of these studies, the species was determined as Callianassa japonica Ortmann, 1891. Following Sakai (1969), it was widely believed, until recently, that two species of Callianassa commonly occurred in intertidal habitats in Japan: C. japonica and C. petalura Stimpson, 1860.
