OCCURRENCE OF A RARE DEEP-SEA CRAB, CYMONOMUS GRANULATUS (NORMAN, 1873) (DECAPODA, BRACHYURA), IN THE SARDINIAN CHANNEL BY MARCO MURA and ANGELO CAU Dipartimento di Biologia Animale ed Ecologia, Università di Cagliari, Viale Poetto, 1, I-09126 Cagliari, Italy ABSTRACT After publication of a list of decapod crustaceans caught at depths between 500 and 1050 m in the Sardinian Channel, in which the presence of Cymonomus granulatus was reported for the Ž rst time, another three individuals of this species were caught in the same area. Two males and one female were collected at depths between 1000 and 1050 m, on deep muddy bottoms. In the Mediterranean, this species has been recorded in three different areas of the north-western basin only. The present record from the Sardinian Channel represents the southernmost locality known until now. This new record is important, because it conŽ rms the presence of C. granulatus in this area and testiŽ es to the large bathymetric distribution of the species in the Mediterranean Sea.
